How to not blow up your 2ZZ-GE, a users guide
The 2ZZ-GE is a 10/10 engine but does have it's flaws, use this upgrade/running guide to protect it
Baffled sump and oil level The factory oil sump is not baffled so offers no protection from oil starvation, this is No1 reason that they blow up. Upgrading to a baffled sump prevents this and although expensive is absolutely worth the peace of mind. The Moroso sump is the go to but other companies make them such as Fensport, weld in baffles are also available Keep your oil level at the maximum but never over, check regularly and top up if needed
Oil weight Factory oil weight is 5W30 but most people tracking their cars go to 5W40 to compensate for the higher temps, change the oil regularly if tracking it to keep it fresh
Oil pump (optional) It seems to be an un-earned reputation that the oil pumps go but overrevving is the main cause of them blowing up, the factory oil pump is made from monkey metal so they are weak, uprated options can be found from MWR (monkey wrench racing) and others The oil pump is driven directly from the crank and is located behind the timing chain, making it best to change replace both at the same time
Premium fuel The factory compression ratio of the 2ZZ is 11.5/1, this is comparable to 911 GT3 from the same period, look after your engine with 99 RON and it will look after you
Oil cooler and oil temp gauge (optional) Doing multiple hot laps on track will have the oil cooking, an oil cooler will solve this with 2ZZ sandwich plates readily available as well as universal oil coolers. An expensive addition but worth it if you’re wanting to stay out on track for longer An oil temp gauge will give you a live reading for assurance, the sandwich plate you choose might have a port you can use for the sensor or a high quality baffled sump will have an accessory port to use
